I still see movies, read books and listen to music by people who have taken political stands that I find disturbing. I choose to ignore the noise and still enjoy the talent. People who say that entertainers should just shut up really are anti-American. We fight and die for the right to have opinions. That is the beauty of our democracy. The band members have divergent political opinions. We have not given anyone the right to use our music but I resent when politicians and their campaign managers 'steal" the music from us. No one ever contacted us. The proper thing to do is to contact the artist and ask permission. Had someone in the Paul Ryan camp bothered to show us respect and contacted us, we would have said, "thank you. but no" and that would have been the end of it.. That's how it is done. It's interesting that only Tea Party candidates have violated the law by putting our music in ads without so much as obtaining a legal license. Two years ago we had to stop the illegal use by two Tea Party candidates whose excuse was "they thought that the first 20 seconds were 'free". This was outrageous, let alone illegal. So much for the 'fine law abiding defenders of the Constitution"!!

For the record, the band members all support Gay marriaige rights and reproductive choices for women. Both of these positions are supported by most of our allies (Canada, Sweden, Argentina, Iceland, South Africa, Norway, Spain, Portugal and Belgium). The Republican platform in this regard however seems to be in line with Iran........just sayin'

Captain Howdy, I agree with you on this one. I also lean more conservative on most issues but not all. Like JJ's post, I also appreciate talent and support artists who have different political views than mine if I like their work. I have been a TS fan going back to 1977. I also knew some of their political leanings having read an interview with JJ talking about how his mother worked on the JFK campaign (which I think was pretty cool as I still believe he was an excellent president.). It mattered not to me - I still went to as many shows as I could and kept up with the releases. The only problem I have is with those who are so over the top - a few actors come to mind like Sean Penn, Alec Baldwin and Ellen Barkin - that it makes it hard to look past the individual and just enjoy their craft. It is too much of a distraction to enjoy what may be excellent work. What I found perplexing about Dee's public stance is that ON THE SURFACE it smacks of hipocrasy. Dee took a famous strong stand against the PMRC defending free speech against a left wing liberal, Al Gore that disagreed with him, yet he wants to mute speech of someone who he disagrees with? Remember that most of the public is not familiar with the law and appearances & image do matter more than it should. I am not in the music industry so I can't speak about what the rights and limitations are of using copyrighted material. I have to trust what JJ said about licensing as I would consider him very knowledgeable in that area - particularly with his management background. However, as far as commerce law goes, you can not refuse to sell a product to someone unless it is a restricted material and they do not have the proper clearance. You must also offer it at the same price or it is a form of discrimination - which is prosecutable. I would think that if any campaign wanted to use copyrighted material and they paid the same rate as another candidate who used the same, they should be allowed to. I am open to legal correction in that regard if I am misinformed. If Obama wanted to use Nugent's "Dog Eat Dog" I think he should be able even if Ted would object - bad example as I think for several reasons he wouldn't but it makes the point . By the way, Iran executes gay people for just for being gay. JJ, please do not even imply that Republicans are of the same ilk whether they agree with gay marraige or not.

All that being said, I will not burn my TS shirts or stopping listening to their music. Too many great memories going back to the Club Daze. It would be like erasing a great part of my life. If the band wants to speak out on issues that are important to them, that is their constitutional right and are free to do so. I just wish that any person with a wide public forum does so intellectually and not emotionally.

Song licensing is like any other kind of product. The owner of the rights can sell them to whomever they want for whatever amount is negotiated. There is no right to use in commerce without an agreement. many artists absolutely refuse use by some persons or products because they object to them. Like I said, it's a sellers market. You can sell the music or not sell it. It's strictly up to the rights holder.

Many times the artist no longer owns the rights and other parties sell the use even if the artist refuses. The artist would still get their portion of the money but can't stop the use.

In our case, we can decide whom we allow to use it. I have witheld the rights to three political organisations in the past 8 years. Dee may have also witheld to other parties that I may not know about.

I hope this clears up the issue

sidebar: I'll tell ya, that Extended Stay America commercial runs more than once an hour...all day...every day..... and there's been a great side effect. Folks are starting to call the radio station and request TS songs. Today, my local station played "I Wanna Rock" for the first time in a while at the request of fans calling in.

thanks for keeping it real, Jay Jay

Freedom of speech and expression are very important to me. My opinion of an actor would likely never change regardless of political leanings or statements. (example- Clint Eastwood) However, music touches me on a deeper level I suppose. When Dirty Diamonds and Eyes of Alice came out-I think within the same year-- TO ME a lot of it was about the war in Iraq. (I'M SO ANGRY) Sometimes an album comes out and it's just like the artist wrote it specifically for ME. so then to find out that Alice Cooper is likely a conservative, believes that every word of the bible should be taken LITERALLY and maybe even voted for bush was a little bit of a problem for me. just a little. I still love him, will buy his music and go to his shows. If I had to watch paul ryan walk up onstage to WERE NOT GONNA TAKE IT all the time and TS let him, it probably would have confused and irritated me. maybe I don't mind musicians voicing political opinions as long as they say what I want to hear. at least I'm being honest. look at the SON OF DETROIT saddled with that romney endorsement. sad. yes, my opinion of him has changed but that is also in part because I dont like country music.

You know, Dee Snider has never shut about anything....and for that matter, neither has anyone in the band... It wasn't as though the comments were from left field (whoops. sorry. no pun intended) WNGTI is a Twisted Sister song--Twisted has always monitored who uses their music and for what purpose. Whether you agree or disagree--it is their right to decide who uses their music--for whatever reasons they give, pro or con.

And before you burn your shirts....there are plenty of folks here who have never had the chance to buy one who I'm sure would be happy to purchase them from you. (seriously. if you want to get them off your hands, plenty of us would be happy to help in that regard)
