U.S. net Smithsonian Channel has acquired Trashopolis, a five-part series looking at how cities such as Rome, New York and Paris were built upon foundations of garbage, with an American premiere slated for November.

The 5 x 45-minutes series, originally a realscreen MIPCOM Pick in 2010, comes from Montreal’s Pixcom Productions and Paris’s Taxi-Brousse. It was originally made for History Television in Canada and ARTE in France.

The show is narrated by comic book writer and musician Jesse Blaze Snider, the son of Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider, and features local experts explaining how rotten corpses, filthy ruins and smelly trash helped shape the bedrock of five international cities.

The first episode, focusing on New York City, premieres November 6
