Like everyone here, I love live music and good HM gigs in particular. Over the past year I have been lucky to see a lot of really good top name bands but something has been starting to bother me and it came home to roost last night at a Duff McKagan gig.

The big question is - Am I getting old or is the quotient of tossers at gigs getting larger? I love to rock out, I jump around, I headbang, I play air guitar, I even mosh a little but I get really annoyed when someone tries to push in front of me or spills their drink on me. Is this just the onset of old age (I am 40) and I should chill-out or are there more arseholes around these days. I remember a much cooler, friendlier vibe at gigs years ago - am I just being sentimental here?

What do you think? I realise different countries will have different experiences but I would still love to know.

Now where did I leave my pipe and slippers?

Yes I agree, there are more idiots at gig's now, and it's all to do with people not really wanting to see the band, I think they go just for the fun of looking for trouble hoping someone would pick a fight back at them. I would just keep it cool, they are not worth your effort. I am sorry to say, but you'll just have to expect that now.

Really good observation Eoineo ! I dont know , to me seems like there were allways a few problem peeps at shows , Being in PA stuff we allways had to keep a close eye on that stuff that someone wasnt doing something stupid like spilling beer on that stuff or something , and here even years ago broken glass was a big problem like in the parking lots of many of the bars, To me it can be a problem industry , but the good peeps like us , I find usually have a good time , Im never looking for trouble, some others I dont know , Ive heard stories of peeps (not alot) throwing beer bottles at Dee and stuff even. I guess there is allways some fool or drunk thats a problem-- Shame as to me I love the gigs they are so much fun.

First question...Who remembers 40? LOL
I agree it seems some people just want to push these days. If they play air guitar it seem they need the same area as the stage LOL
But most of the shows i saw this year, Heaven & Hell, Chickenfoot, Sir Paul and AC/DC the crowd was OK, maybe because we had assigned seats.

Sounds liek a good time to play the song "30"

Im glad you talked about this cause it makes me realise you can bother others without even realising it . Im not real big but being 6'1" if I have friends up front by the stage very often Ill go for replacement drinks from the bar, if needed as I rarely have any problem getting back up front, and while im cool and never pick fights or anything , who knows I may have annoyed somebody by sort of pushing my way back up where I was , without even realising it-- good food for thought ! If I want to jump around alot I will go to the back as there is more room and I wont bother other's , I try and not be a total scumbag !

Glad to see it's not just me. Thanks for the replies. I'll try to stay mellow at Motorhead and not let the idiots (tiny minority) annoy me

It is SOOO not you.
The show last night REALLY irked me. I love crowds that are into it...rocking out, headbanging, all good. But you are absolutely on the marker--the crowds today have no sense of show etiquette. It's "ALL ABOUT ME" crap, and the alcohol has a LOT to do with it. I'm sorry, but they aren't there to enjoy the band. They are there to get fucked up, and that's the problem. Every single time, at every show, you can bet the the idiots causing the problems are also the drunker ones in the crowd. I'm not saying don't drink.... I just wish folks drank in moderation so that they didn't make things suck for the rest of us.

Captain Howdy (Chris from Chicago) and I rocked out together at the Ft Wayne show....and the only problems we encountered were when drunk concert goers acted like morons. I'm not too old to enjoy TS....but I'm too old to tolerate the crap!

But , I know a little about this. Years ago I got wrecked bad - had nothing to do with it, a from the rear wreck I never thought would happen. The one thing it did -that a great med person Helped me with - some know ( thank god to get rid of that problem- Very dangerous ) was left me with a serious Codine problem as in so called "ROXY CODONE", now let me tell you , Mix that with a bunch of alcohol+ Zanex ,or and Reffer etc. and flying high is putting it mildly! For me when I saw Micheal Jackson die and also what happened to the sixth sister and With the help of a really great person I woke up to the fact that -It had to go ! ( PERMENTALLY)Id be far better off in pain or dead ! When you get like that ,yea -- You can rock! and be some what oblivious to others with out intending to be a scum bag ! -- But be warned !!!!! The getting out of that will put you through some of the worst hell of your life ! That you will never forget ! -- It took me three times of going through that ,till I got it right . And belive you me, I dont wish that hell on anybody ! Ill never let that happen again ! - You actually can trust me on that ! ( those who know that hell I dont have to convince. ) That hell will beat the crap out of you ! While medication for pain can be important and good ,I think doctors should at least " warn you " of the dangers of this stuff! " I found the Serious Rockin was just in me anyway "

Hey there Jim
I hear ya, and I have plenty of friends who went through addiction to prescription pain pills. (have one friend now who is extremely addicted and not ready to admit she has a problem yet....) My drug of choice was primarily booze--but my friends were all drunks and junkies, and I was just one needle away from joining them. (Literally... they fixed up my arm and at the last minute, I changed my mind. call it clarity...divine intervention...whatever you like)

I've been completely clean and sober for 17 years now through a 12-step program. Detoxing is no picnic but you are so right--the life on the other side of addiction is just so much better. I've been thrown out of countless clubs during my younger years for all sorts of things that I'm not particularly proud of. Today, I try my best to live a life based on the principles of honesty, integrity, open-mindedness, and service to others. I make a conscious effort today to do the right thing, help other people and leave a positive footprint wherever I go.

Terry, Your friend as am I, are very lucky to have you as a friend. And thank god your knowledge may be able to help her. While I have never done anything that involved a needle, except under surgery , by a actual anesthesieologist, I do so know the other part of the detox deal; first hand OMG

Unfortunately I was not financially able at the time to be able to look for proffesional help, and I was scared to. And for god sake if you need it-- get it ! The only way I made it was I finally told my self, ok Jim , its to the life or to the death and I was serious. Having run serious track for eleven years prior in my life helped with the determination part. but i was going for it and what ever happened -happened philosophy. --Not a fun place to be .

But ( which is really a good thing for todays youth to hear) I wish I could have -- and if your addiction is bad enough -- You have to - thats all there is to it . Its to dangerous not to - between the not being able to sleep for a week-I mean at all, mussle spasms which alone can scare the shit out of you. , hallucinations omg ,may sound like fun? it Isnt! , feeling like fucking hell, couldnt eat,and when I tried felt like throwing it right back up, Being hot than cold in minuites in the same room ,disorientation, OMG and thats just the start of the list .And while what im doing right now ( explaining this) may nix any career future of mine - If I can save some people from that hell- Then so fucking be it ! This is why we are here, (one real good reason) I mean what the hell mattered in the end anyway, and should your friend need some guidence , feel free to pass along my # to her. I had to do it allmost alone, except for one local person I called everyday or several to keep posted on progress and situation. Anyway thank god thats history! and anyone thinking of this please hear me hear,Its not just intravienus stuff, oral stuff can be very dangerous, It winds up in the vains anyway -just a tad slower.
That problem may cost me esentually my life - I lost allmost everthing, and I may now with the recession. all I can say now to anyone , especially if its just for partying - Please think long and hard before you make that mistake. ( And while I may reget having writen this tonight --It was the right thing to do ! ) Gosh , we are so cruel to ourselves sometimes-- U know?

My friends and I all did it through 12-step programs....through Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. No dues or fees....many of us detoxed on our own since the majority of us were homeless, unemployed, broke, etc. The few more severe cases did it through local emergency rooms if they didn't have the money or insurance to go through a detox program. Many larger cities now have subsidized programs to help those who can't afford an inpatient program but need one, although many have waitlists.

No special knowledge here on my part. I just followed the advice that was given to me and asked for the help of others when I couldn't do it alone. No magic tricks but plenty of miracles. It is sometimes very hard for me to go to the TS shows because I can smell the alcohol when everyone around me is drinking beer, and it does make me jones for it, but I just promise myself that no matter what happens, I will not drink or use that day....and stick to it.

I am very grateful to all the friends I've made through the TS slamboard--so many good people out there, and I just love how we come from every walk of life imaginable, and yet this one common bond brings us all together, from all over the country, for one purpose: to ROCK OUT to TS! love it
