Medical experts in Australia have warned that headbanging is likely to be behind a silent epidemic of head- and neck-related injuries.

Dr. Andrew McIntosh, biomedical and injury expert at the University Of New South Wales, carried out research into headbanging, and published his findings in the British Medical Journal.

McIntosh issued a stark warning to music fans who headbang.

"We identified a definite risk of mild traumatic brain injury from headbanging," he said. "We would suggest a proper public health warning, as for smoking."

The report calls for fans to wear neck braces when headbanging in order to protect themselves from injury. McIntosh also recommended listening to less intense music, reports The Herald.

"Perhaps AC/DC should play something more appropriate, such as 'Moon River,'" he joked

Yea , while that is obviously a little excessive, ha ha ha -There is a certain amount of truth to all this. I was recently talking to a girlfriend here on the site jokingly saying Twisted may have to think about putting warnings on their music. This I said to her ( joking) because I hurt myself Twice - rockin to this band as I just get into it so much, I found out you can actually do that. But to me while the pain can be a little annoying I allways smile in the healing process just reallising I had so much fun ,that that actually did happen -- Being a SMF is great !!!, and if you do get hurt, I mean to me thats cool ! cause you had so much fun that happened ! -- Its allmost like if you never get hurt, you wernt pushing the envelope enough, but if you have , you know youve been doing some serious rockin ! Its like Dee and the miniscus tear, well this guy gets out there and does serious rockin, and you kind of have to applaude the effort. Oh yes we will be serious SMF's Forever !

Where will it all end? Maybe break dancers should all wear hard hats, Moshers should wear safety boots & all barn dancers should wear safety spec's because of all that straw flying about too.

i once have been headbanging, but it didn't give me a pain in the neck, It Gave me a bad headach and a lot of dizzyness though. I heard that becouse you go forewards and back yur bloodstream in your head gets a bit messed up and could couse trouble, but I have also heard when leaning forewards and making these little circles, like you mostly see with mucisians with long hair on stages, when headbanging, it's somehow somewhat better for your health than going from back to forth and back again...
But than again I havn't that much experience...
But it is true, you have a bigger risk of having neck problems...
Though I haven't heard about the first one having a whioplash through headbanging, so perhaps it'sslightly a bit overreacted what the docter in the article sais...
