It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…a Twisted Christmas that is! In April of 2005 I saw the reunited line up of Twisted Sister perform live in Vegas and it turned out to be the best show I’d seen all year long. On December 14th, 2006, I was privileged once again to catch the band in action. In support of their most recent release, A Twisted Christmas, the band booked ten dates this Holiday season, one of which landed them smack dab in the heart of the happiest place on earth, Downtown Disney (which in and of itself is pretty twisted if you think about it – Twisted Sister at Disneyland singing Christmas carols?) at the House of Blues, Anaheim. Needless to say they completely outdid themselves and have once again proven to be the most memorable performance I’ve attended this past year.

The stage was adorned with festive features including: guitar amps that looked like Christmas presents, ribbons and lights and garland wrapped around the mic stands, the drums and the P.A. speakers - even their stage techs were dressed like elves. Nothing compared, however, to seeing frontman Dee Snider in full Twisted Sister make-up mind you, appearing in a full-fledged Santa suit - complete with beard. Besides looking more or less exactly like they did in 1984, the guys nailed every song with absolute ease and sounded fresh and full of spirit (pun intended . Playing an array of songs from their classic catalogue including the hits We’re Not Gonna take it”, “I Wanna Rock”, “The Price”, “SMF”, “You Can’t Kill Rock and Roll” and “Under The Blade” they also managed to squeeze in an assortment of Christmas carols such as “Silver Bells”, “White Christmas”, “O Come All Ye Faithful”, “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” and their own take on the “12 Days of Christmas” titled “Heavy Metal Christmas”.

In addition to their amazing visual and sonic performance, their sense of humor was constant throughout the night as well, keeping us all in stitches. Dee blamed his infamous look on the fact that when he was a kid all he ever got for Christmas were socks when what he really wanted was Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots. He went on to say that when he was eight years old he decided to go see the real Santa Claus down at the local department store to let him know that if he didn’t get what he wanted this year he was done with Christmas forever! However, when he finally reached the moment of truth, Santa had grown so much larger and so much intimidation had built up that when Santa asked him what he wanted for Christmas, instead of saying, ‘Rock em Sock em Robots’ all he could say was, “I Wanna Rock!” At which time the familiar chords struck and they went right into the song. In a way I guess Dee inevitably did get what he asked for, being that Twisted Sister became the result. Another stand out moment was the band’s decision to really put a twisted touch to their set by changing-up some of the traditional lyrics of Christmas favorites. “I saw mommy blowing Santa Claus” was among the more hilarious renditions of the evening that totally caught me off guard.

Ultimately this was a fantastic night of Holiday cheer and Heavy Metal angst; who’d of thought that the two could actually go hand-in-hand. While all of us in attendance were having a holly jolly good time banging our heads to the sounds of Twisted Sister, some truly great gift giving was also taking place as Jay Jay informed us that a portion of all the ticket sales for the tour as well as a portion of the Christmas album sales was being set aside to benefit children with autism. For those who are unable to attend any of the Twisted Christmas shows you can catch the guys performing a taste on December 22nd when they play their new single, “O Come All Ye Faithful”, on The Late Late show with Craig Ferguson. The guys recently did a stint on the Tonight Show and the official word from the band was that the Tonight Show crew called them ‘the best live performance they’ve ever had.’ While this CD was set to mark the end for the band, renewed interest may have caused the winds to change and this may be only the beginning of the end - or so all the true SMF’s of the world are hoping for.
