If you've tried logging on to the board in the past week or so, I'm sure you're noticing that the board is a lot slower than ususal, and there's a good reason.

We are getting hammered. This site is receiving visitors on a scale that we have never experienced since it was launched nearly six years ago. The hosting company says their T1 line is being overrun by people coming to this site.

By way of comparison, I looked back on the site stats from earlier in the year. Picking the month of June out of a hat, we had a total number of about 50,000 visits for the month.

By contrast, we're up to nearly 35,000 visits this week, and nearly 90,000 visits for the month so far. Obviously, the fact that the band is on tour and making high-profile public appearances is generating a shitload of traffic.

It's a blessing and a curse. As webmaster, it's my dream as well as my worst nightmare.

I'm seeing the complaints, and I'm trying my best to make this board run smoother and faster. In an effort to do so, I'm going to have to turn off some of the site features in this time of overwhelming traffic.

I'm going through the admin section and disabling any unnecessary features that serve to slow down load time of the board. You may notice than some graphic elements that are usually there won't be for a while, and some of the features everyone takes for granted (being able to change avatars on a whim, for instance) won't be available. Uploading a lot of avatars only increases the size of the database, and that makes the pages load more slowly.

My main goal is to make sure people can get here and post. The board may not look quite the same, but I'd rather have it work faster than look prettier at this point.

When traffic returns to more normal levels, I'll bring the features back.

I'd appreciate your patience here. You know I want this board to accomodate all the new SMFs that are coming through the doors, and I'll try best I can to get it running faster.

Thanks for understanding.

- D

Update: Okay, I've turned off a lot of stuff, and I've decreased the number of posts that appear on the forum pages. I also optimized the database, and the board seems to be running a bit better at this point.

Making these temporary changes may not kill the 'network busy' messages entirely - we are still experiencing very high traffic, and that's the main reason those messages are coming up - but they should be less frequent.

Don,

Thanks so much. I am positive all of us SMFs will be patient and understand what you needed to do to accomodate everyone. With TS rise in popularity from old schoolers to new schoolers, this site was sure to get slammed.

Merry Twisted Christmas to you!

...posted a message about changing hosts. I hit the wrong button and edited his post instead of replying to it. Sorry about that.

A hosting change is in the works for after the holidays.

Or maybe we can just take this slamboard around to the back of the barn and shoot it.

thanks Webbie!
I've had the unfortunate luck that every time I've tried to get on the slamboard the last few weeks, I've had no success but I knew you were on the case! thanks for all your hard work!

I still get the 'network busy' errors, but it doesn't seem like I'm getting them as much. Then again, I can't tell because I want it to work better...

Is it running smoother now? I hope so - I can't move the site until I talk to the band, and I can't talk to the band until the tour is done, so we kinda have to put up with it the way it is for a little while longer...

Thanks to all of you SMFs for being so patient (well, except for Fast Joey. Heh, heh... kidding, Joey.)

YES! I had not been able to get on much in the last week, I had kinda given up for a bit. It is working smoother now with an occasional refresh needed or error message.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

But we've got to get this site onto a server that can handle more traffic, since I don't think this is gonna slow down any time soon...

I love having more traffic (We're gonna hit 2 million visits soon), but I cringe when I think of people having to wait to get on the site.

We'll fix that.
