I posted this at the MetalSludge board (where I practically live), but I thought I'd finally sign up officially to the TS Slamboard and post it here as well. Surely you folks will be able to appreciate the effort I put into it a tad more than the average Sludger - heh.

Warning: Long-ass review coming up, which will contain spoilers for anyone planning on attending one of the shows. Consider yourself warned!

All the bullshit we had to go through for this show – the ridiculous amount of trouble of getting our tickets exchanged for the same seats we had at the original venue, the extra travel time through construction zones to get to the new venue, the frigid titty-freezing weather waiting to get inside, the almost-as-titty-freezing weather inside, and the horrible sound system everyone was forced to put up with – it was all ultimately well worth it and then some. Tonight’s show was abso-fucking-lutely AWESOME. No other word for it – just total awesomeness.

Unfortunately, as I said, the sound at this teeny little craphole place was pretty pathetic, especially by theatre standards. I don’t know if it was that house PA & equipment was just total shit, or if it was the fact that the acoustics of the place were severely lacking, or that it seemed like TS’s sound guy was perhaps sleeping off a hangover during the show or something (LOL) – but the band was plagued by sound issues most of the night and what went out into the audience was rather muffled and distorted. It most definitely could have been a LOT better. Regardless of that, the band put on one hell of an energetic show, with all of the guys getting visibly more pumped up and into it all as the night progressed. And the audience was right there with them, giving as good as they got the entire two hours. With each new song, the cheering got louder, the fists and horns in the air multiplied, and the sing-a-longs became much more animated and enthusiastic. There were actually times when we almost drowned out the band or got ahead of them altogether – such as during the beginning of “The Price”, when the crowd began to sing the words of the first verse to Dee. It was actually hard to tell if he was impressed or pissed off that we were stealing his thunder .

Honestly, even with the sound issues (though they were hardly the band’s fault), this was probably the best I’ve seen Twisted Sister since they reformed back in 2001 at New York Steel. I am continually blown away by just how good these guys are live, and the power and intensity with which they play. None of them have lost a thing. Dee especially looks, moves, behaves, and sounds exactly as he did back in the day – the vocals are every bit as powerful as they ever were and he hits every note with ease. It’s obvious he takes care of his voice just as well as he takes care of his body (and damn, what a body – I swear you could grate cheese on those abs, man! guys half his age should be so lucky to be built like that). And most noticeable of all is the FUN the guys are so obviously having right now. I seriously lost track of the amount of times one or all or them burst out laughing as they joked around with each other and the crowd. Shitloads of smiles all around, from the band members to the audience (yes, even the badass Mark Mendoza – quite a lot tonight, believe it or not, and even several giggles – though I’m sure he’d pound me for saying that). I myself felt like a doof for grinning so damn much. But it was hard not to – the show was just an insane amount of fun.

I suck at keeping track of songs, and since I didn’t manage to snag an actual set list from the stage and I’m not one of those obsessive folks who furiously writes down every song as its played, you’ll have to make do with what I can recall (and/or wait till one of the aforementioned set-writers pops in). One thing I can definitely say with absolute certainty is that the handful of Christmas songs that were played fit in fabulously with the classic material. Granted, I actually really enjoy the new Christmas album so that’s probably not surprising, but truly, the songs come off great live and are a lot of fun. To help get people in the “Twisted Christmas spirit”, the entire stage was decorated all over the freakin’ place with multiple strands of different coloured and sized Christmas lights, large red bows adorned the front of each Marshall stack, silver tinsel garland was swagged across the front of the drum riser and around each stationary mic stand, a few large faux candy canes were placed here & there, and a layer of thick cotton-batting-style fake snow covered the entire top of the drum riser. Even the stage hands could be seen wearing giant goofy elf ears. It actually became quite comical to watch them scuttle around all serious-like and intent on their duties, all the while looking like scruffy psychotic refugees from Santa’s Workshop. The band members themselves were dressed as they normally are – costumes, makeup, the works – but they would come out for a song here and there wearing various types of Christmas hats, and the entire show kicked off with Dee bounding out onto the stage to their rendition of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, clad in a full-on Santa suit and carrying a red sack full of mini candy canes that he maniacally tossed out to the eager audience. That was definitely unexpected and quite amusing to see, though unfortunately it all happened so fast that I only managed to snap off one blurry photo of Santa Snider before he whipped off the red suit to reveal his standard pink & black outfit.

In total they played about six Christmas songs mixed in with around nine or so of their classic songs. Classic material that I remember being played included “You Can’t Stop Rock and Roll”, “Under the Blade”, “Shoot ‘Em Down”, “I Wanna Rock”, “Stay Hungry”, “Burn in Hell”, “We’re Not Gonna Take It”, and “SMF”. Christmas songs that were played (that I can recall) were “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, “Silver Bells”, “White Christmas”, “Oh Come All Ye Faithful”, and an absolutely hilarious audience-participation version of “The 12 Days of Christmas” done Heavy Metal style to kick off the encore. All of the guys in the band stood at the front of the stage, each with their own mic, and each with a handful of big white cue cards with their “day” & lyric on them that they would hold up as they sang so the crowd could sing along. The revamped lyrics to the song are amusing in their own right, but it was the fact that the guys would frequently screw up what they were supposed to sing and when they were supposed to sing it, despite the benefit of the cards, that was the most hysterical part of it all. The guys were all killing themselves laughing by the end of it, as was most of the audience. Seriously, if you couldn’t enjoy yourself during that performance, then your name must be Ebenezer Scrooge.

All in all, I give tonight’s show a solid 8 out of 10. If it weren’t for the sound issues, it would have been a complete ten. It really was THAT good. My view of the show was pretty close to perfect as well, as I managed to secure myself a nice cozy spot right in the front row up against the stage, right in-between Eddie and JayJay, soon after it got started. Dead-centre would have been better, of course, but hey, I ain’t complaining. Consequently I was able to snap off some great photos (at least, I think I did – I won’t be able to upload them to know for sure until tomorrow night, so keep your fingers crossed for me). A few of them are probably nice close-ups of JayJay’s nose or crotch, since he frequently stood about three inches away from me - I narrowly escaped being clubbed in the head a couple of times by a guitar headstock . It’s all good, though. Being able to really SEE the guys play their instruments and watch the interaction between bandmembers up close like that, and even hear them, is always worth the hazard. Oh, and I was also lucky enough to walk away with a JayJay guitar pic and an AJ drum stick – so, YAY ME! **grin**

For anyone who isn’t sure about attending a show because of the whole Christmas thing, just get a ticket and GO. You’ll have a great time. Trust me, I damn near didn’t go tonight myself. I can guarantee you that you’ll kick yourself if you miss out on this show. It’s totally worth it, and a lot of fun – even for you Bah-Humbugs out there.

Glitterqueen,

Welcome, and WOW!!!  Awesome review!!  Thank you so much for taking the time to do that! I could picture everything you said, and I was also giggling! There is nothing like the Boyz having fun together onstage.  I absolutely cannot wait to see that on Saturday now, your review got me so psyched!

Regarding where you stood, I love that spot. That's my idea of heaven right there! Fought to be exactly there for the past 16 years whenever humanly possible, headstock dangers and all.

What an awesome night for you guys! Glad it all turned out ok in the end...TS can do that to you!

CreepyDude, Psxguy, and everyone else to come, thank you for your reviews and vids as well! Don't be strangers now!!

Happy Holidays to all of you and yours!

D

Review from above is dead on. The show was fantastic. I really enjoyed how they incorporated the Christmas songs. Let me try to put together the set list. I'm sure I'll miss something or re-arrange something, but someone can correct me if they want.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
Shoot em Down
Stay Hungry
I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
The Price
Oh Come All Ye Faithful
You Can't Stop Rock n Roll
I'll be home for Christmas
Burn in Hell
Silver Bells
The Fire Still Burns
White Christmas
Under the Blade
I Wanna Rock

ENCORE
Heavy Metal Christmas
We're Not Gonna Take It
