TWISTED SISTER / OUTLOUD

Date: 12th July, 2011
Venue: Iera Odos
Ticket: €35
Promoter: Spicy Entertainment

TWISTED SISTEEEEEEEER…Come out and plaaaaaaaaaaay…”; and they did. They came, they saw, they conquered and the ripped our a***s off with some high-energy octane-loaded heavy hittin’ Hard Rock dynamites destined to be eternal anthems in the history of our beloved music. Our genitals grew bigger that evening, that’s for sure. The legendary outfit from NY, USA has continuously denied to release new studio stuff that’s gonna alter the band’s history and finally will not be desired by the band’s fans, so what’s better than take a dozen of shows slot all around Europe every now and then, play songs that give fun and energy and – above all – rock the world by having a good time? That simple...

The pre-sale for this show was not good, so it was moved from an open-air bigger space to a 2,000 capacity downtown venue. And that was good, since nothing was omitted from the energy and sweat delivered by both the band and the 1.000-1.300 fans (OK, the crowd it was most energetic I’ve ever seen but they/we overlapped the usual dryness seen the last years). The venue proved to be rather fitting for the ‘deployment’ of the band’s followers and the time schedule also ran smooth.

The opening act, OUTLOUD, were nice even if their sound was not that impressive. The Greek/American melodic hardrockers presented their newest album “Love Catastrophe” by playing enough songs while they also showcased some cuts from their self-titled debut album. The crowd applauded their set and seemed to enjoy their performance, but I would not say they did grab us by the balls and not let go. Still, they did their best and succeeded in raising the temperature for the long-awaited headliners.

Watching TWISTED SISTER live without their trademark makeup is a sin... unless if they kick your ass mercilessly not letting you even think about it. Truth is the two times these legends form USA had stepped on Greek ground recently they offered two respective helluva shows – this may partially explain the semi-disappointing presale – so I personally had to think about the sound quality and only. Thankfully, the sound engineer did his best and the dynamic “It’s A Long Way To The Top” speakers intro and only made the arena go wild. As soon as the band entered with “What You Don’t Know (Sure Can Hurt You)” it was a matter of common sense to await for a kick-ass 90-minute recital. And this is what actually happened...

Fact #1: Dee Snider is an evergreen frontman; he never stopped banging his head, screaming his guts out, entertaining the crowd, have fun with his band mates and – most of all – deliver some lively performance every newcomer singer should take lessons from. He can successfully rely on his myth, but that’s the point when you do not have anything to prove; you sing from the heart, take no prisoners and eventually confirm the glorious 80s ideals will never fade.

Fact #2: With such a songlist rare are the times you can be not as good as requested. Again avoiding performing stuff from the “Love Is For Suckers” album, TWISTED SISTER waltzed off with the ‘best live act in Greece for 2011’ prize just by playing what we were already expecting to listen to. The energy was endless, the sound was bombastic, the drumming of A. J. Pero was (thankfully) not as verbose as the two previous times and the stage presence of all the members was nothing less than regally rowdy. As for the pieces that deafened us just look at the setlist below. Nuff said.

Fact #3: I strongly believe the decade we’re currently covering will be the most crucial for our music. Imagine the next 5-20 years, when most of the 80s bands we’re worshiping will cease to exist, who’s gonna deliver captivating shows, who’s gonna sweat their asses off, who’s gonna perform a faultless sing-along-dance-with setlist... Phewww, I cannot imagine myself going to an e.g. EDGUY show and juice out sweat from my T-shirt afterwards. Yeap, that’s the splendor of the past...

If you do not know how a TWISTED SISTER concert looks like, you can easily grab some DVD and have fun in your sofa. But if you want to be a bright part of this live experience, just do not miss the chance to see them again at a venue near you. Even the multi-played hits like “We’re Not...” and “I Wanna…” sound like first-date charming if you’re in the mood for such a gig. How thankful enough of us, the older fans, are they’ve not released any dissonant out-of-frame decadent reunion studio CD for 24 years now!
