I hear ya, and I have plenty of friends who went through addiction to prescription pain pills. (have one friend now who is extremely addicted and not ready to admit she has a problem yet....) My drug of choice was primarily booze--but my friends were all drunks and junkies, and I was just one needle away from joining them. (Literally... they fixed up my arm and at the last minute, I changed my mind. call it clarity...divine intervention...whatever you like)
I've been completely clean and sober for 17 years now through a 12-step program. Detoxing is no picnic but you are so right--the life on the other side of addiction is just so much better. I've been thrown out of countless clubs during my younger years for all sorts of things that I'm not particularly proud of. Today, I try my best to live a life based on the principles of honesty, integrity, open-mindedness, and service to others. I make a conscious effort today to do the right thing, help other people and leave a positive footprint wherever I go.
