Exclusive Interview with JJ French of Twisted Sister!

We got JJ French on our hot telephone line and put him live on Tangra Mega Rock.

V.V. - Hello Mr. French how are you doing?

JJ French - I am very well thank you.

Good, so let's start will this - what are you to now?

Well we are right now finishing up recording our next release which is going to be an album of Christmas songs half done in heavy metal style and that is gonna be released October 17th in around the world.

Sounds very good actually, but which is your favourite Christmas song?

Oh, man i don't know because we do "I'll be home for Christmas", "The Christmas song", "Silver bells", "I saw mommy kissing Santa Claus" there a lot of good songs
out here I don't know which is my favourite.

Do you believe in Santa Claus?

You know what, if she is about 5'8 with a really great body then yeah I believe in Santa Claus...

You are going to have show in Bulgaria for the first time ever. What are your expectations about the show, did you ever hear something about this country?

No, but to be honest with you the reformation of the band has been an astonishing experience for all of us because we've headlined countries that we have never played in before. So one would think that we were going back to places that we played in and the band would be popular but when I tell you that we have been to Spain and Korea and Mexico and Puerto Rico and Finland and now Bulgaria and Greece and these are countries that we've never played in before and there were huge crowds so we are incredibly honoured by that and mystified by that we just go out there and play our songs and it is just a blow away that the world know all these songs we didn't have any idea, because we have been away for so many years we had no idea.

It's been a moment, as you said, that Twisted Sister were not together. What have you been doing personally J.J.?

Well, I manage artists, I managed and produced a band called Sevendust I don't know if you ever heard of them...

Of course...

Oh, I don't know because I don't know what bands make it over there or not, but Sevendust are very popular I managed them and produced them for a while, I have a management company so I am really busy managing other artists and not only metal artists but like pop artist or Dj's and stuff like that so it is much broader and wilder range of business.

OK, it is the so called French management, right?

Yes, it is the French management. The problem is it is two companies - one is French management and the other is Rebellion entertainment.

Well and then you got back together which is amazing and we heard about this amazing concert that you had something like in the very beginning of July in Montreal. What was like to be again together in front of 80 thousand people?

It was unbelievable you know again this is an example of things that we just don't understand. We were very popular in Canada back in day but had not been back
there in Quebec in over 20 years and I think when Scorpions and Twisted Sister were booked to play a festival I think the promoters figured 20 thousand people would show up which is about right. When 80 thousand people showed up I think everybody had heart attack. It was amazing and just underlines everything that we have been seeing over the last 3 years, the crowds are huge and the reactions are astounding and we are all loving it.

Do you know which bands are you going to share the bill with in Bulgaria?

I have no idea.

I can tell you, the one is called Testament...of good old Chuck Billy and the second one stepped into the shoes of Lordi and it is a German band called Helloween. Do you know these two bands?

Oh, yeah sure I know them. I know all the bands for sure I've known them for many many years.

OK, so it is going to be something more than just a festival this is going to be like reunions of friends.

No, let me just clarify this since our return we have played on many festivals with those bands but I don't know them personally.
But you say Lordi is not gonna be on the bill now?

No.

We played with them two months ago in Finland and I am on the Lordi record and again I had no idea it was a surprise..they told me to play the guitar and I did and the next thing you know the record was a hit and I am very happy for them, they are very nice people Lordi or Tommy is a great guy and we met them at the show in Finland but I don't know Testament personally I don't know Helloween but we run across them.

This is a good occasion to meet them.

Oh, yeah you know this would be great because I always love meeting other bands.

Is your real name really Jonh Segall?

No. Just out of curiosity where did came out from?

It is from Wikipedia.

My name is John French, that is my legal name.

You know what, the rumour goes even deeper on the Internet saying that you played together with Jene Simmons and Paul Stanley in a band in the early 70s
called Rainbow that has nothing to do with the British band Rainbow.

I read that and that is the most ridiculous mistaken fact that is really untrue, I can say this I was one of many guitar players who auditioned for KISS and I spend a couple of weeks practising with those guys they didn't have a name yet, they were not KISS, they weren't wicked laughter and I was one of many but somehow someway that statement I just gave you has been misinterpreted, misprinted, miswritten everything from I was a member of KISS to whatever and I never ever said it.
I auditioned for the band in June of 1972 and in September of 1972 they picked up Ace out of maybe 25 or 30 people and when they picked Ace I called them around that time just to say: "Hey, how are you doing, what is going on?" they tolled me they hired Ace and I went down to rehearsal and watched them when they first rehearsed with Ace and he was perfect for this band.

Concentrating on the album did you had the chance to listen to some new records in the world of metal today? I am talking about the new Motorhead, the new Slayer and the new Iron Maiden?

No, because in the summertime especially we travel so much and we have been concentrating on just working and then recovering from the jet lack and then going
back in the studio so I haven't had a chance to listen to them. I haven't play a new CD in about a year...We see Lemmy all the time we are old friends, I mean he is just one of the dearest people on the planet...

TWISTED SISTER will play with Testament and Helloween on August 25th at the Kaliakra Rock Fest 2006 (Joker Media/Kavarna municip.).
