DEE SNIDER To Release Dee Does Broadway Album And First Ever Autobiography In May; Track Streaming
Rock Hard
Posted on Monday, March 12, 2012 at 16:15:44 EST

DEE SNIDER, the unmistakable frontman of the rock band TWISTED SISTER, will release his new studio album, Dee Does Broadway, on May 8th on Razor & Tie. The album features Dee's powerful voice and theatrical persona as he exudes his rock 'n' roll take on several Broadway classics. The new album will coincide with the release of his first ever autobiography, Shut Up And Give Me The Mic (Gallery Books) on May 8th.

Dee Does Broadway features several special guest stars, including Broadway and television icon Bebe Neuwirth on the DAMN YANKEES song 'Whatever Lola Wants', Broadway legend Patti LuPone on a West Side Story medley 'Tonight/Somewhere', pop icon CYNDI LAUPER on Sweet Charity's 'Big Spender', Clay Aiken of American Idol on the Guys And Dolls classic 'Luck Be a Lady Tonight', the stars of the Broadway hit musical Priscilla Queen Of The Desert (Will Swenson, Tony Sheldon, and Nick Adams) on South Pacific's 'There Is Nothin' Like A Dame', Mark Wood of the TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA playing violin on the Phantom Of The Opera ballad 'Music Of The Night', as well a special rendition of 'The Joint Is Jumpin'' from Ain't Misbehavin' with Dee's oldest son, Jesse "Blaze" Snider. Songs are also featured from classic Broadway shows including Cabaret, Chicago, The Threepenny Opera, Anything Goes, and Sweeney Todd.

Dee Does Broadway was spawned from a number of voicemails exchanged featuring "Broadway Tunes" sung as messages between Dee Snider and ALICE COOPER in 2009 and Dee's 2010 Broadway run in the Broadway rock musical Rock of Ages. Inspired to take this musical journey, the classically trained countertenor (who sang with his high school choir and always loud as hell) Snider enlisted producers Bob Kulick and Brett Chassen (whom Dee worked with on the metalized FRANK SINATRA tribute called Sin-atra). The album was mixed by the legendary Ric Wake and Gustavo Celis, and features the incredible orchestrations and playing by the renowned composer/arranger Doug Katsaros and the bass guitar playing of one of rock's prolific players, the legendary Rudy Sarzo.

Dee Snider explains the process, "Over the past year I have worked closely with my team and collaborators picking from decades of musical hits with only two rules: The song had to speak to me as a singer on some level, and it could not be a rock song to begin with. No Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease, Hair, Rent, Rocky Horror, etc. What would be the challenge in that?" He continues, "There are many who think doing an album of rocked out show tunes is pure insanity on my part. Apparently, they haven't seen any photos of me from the 70's and 80's. Could I have been in a more theatrical band? Ever since I was a kid, I'd heard the real power inherent in a lot of songs from musicals and this record gives me the chance to show it."

Never straying from his rock roots, Dee Snider puts his own unique spin on musical favorites, "It may not be metal - but it definitely rocks!"

Dee Does Broadway tracklisting:

'Cabaret
'The Ballad Of Sweeney Todd'
'Big Spender' (with Cyndi Lauper)
'Mack the Knife'
'Whatever Lola Wants' (with Bebe Neuwirth)
'Music Of The Night' (with guest violinist Mark Wood)
'The Joint Is Jumpin'' (with Jesse Blaze Snider)
'Luck Be A Lady' (with Clay Aiken)
'I Get A Kick Out Of You'
'There Is Nothin' Like A Dame' (with the stars of Priscilla Queen of the Desert: Will Swenson, Tony Sheldon and Nick Adams)
'Razzle Dazzle'
'Tonight/Somewhere' (with Patti LuPone)

Filled with entertaining anecdotes and candid confessions, Shut Up And Give Me The Mic takes you through the good times and bad with a heavy metal star who worked as hard as he played, and who did it all for his wife, four kids, and millions of fans. As lead singer and songwriter of Twisted Sister, Dee Snider became the poster boy for heavy metal, hair bands, and the wild side of rock. Now, in his twisted new memoir, he reveals the real stories behind the crazy makeup, the big hair, and badass hits like 'We're Not Gonna Take It' and 'I Wanna Rock'.

In his journey from every parent's worst teenage nightmare to Renaissance man, Dee avoided the usual pitfalls associated with rock stars. But that didn't stop Tipper Gore and the Parents Music Resource Center from targeting him-a fight that led him to testify before Congress with FRANK ZAPPA. He may have been slapped with a Parental Advisory warning label, but, through it all, Snider stayed positive and focused on being the best he could be.

Dee Snider, 'I Get a Kick Out of You': The Twisted Sister Icon Goes Broadway -- Song Premiere

Dee Snider is a true renaissance man.

Not only has Snider been the iconic frontman of the mighty Twisted Sister, he's also a published author (1987's Dee Snider's Teenage Survival Guide), actor and screenwriter (1998's Strangeland), and in the last few years, a reality show star (Growing Up Twisted, Celebrity Apprentice).

Snider might have recently celebrated his 57th birthday, but the Long Island-based singer is showing no signs of slowing down. On May 8, the singer will release Dee Does Broadway, a solo album where the Twisted Sister rocker gives a new spin to classic from The Great White Way. The new album will coincide with the release of Snider's first ever autobiography, Shut Up and Give Me the Mic.

In an attempt to class Noisecreep up, we're proud to bring you the exclusive premiere of Snider's cover of "I Get a Kick Out of You."

Listen to "I Get a Kick Out of You" From Dee Snider

"I Get a Kick Out of You" was written by Cole Porter and first appeared in the 1934 musical, Anything Goes. The song has also been covered by everyone from Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday to Dolly Parton and Peggy Lee.

Dee Does Broadway was spawned from a number of voicemails exchanged featuring "Broadway Tunes" sung as messages between Dee Snider and Alice Cooper in 2009 and Dee's 2010 Broadway run in the rock musical Rock of Ages. The amazing guitar and drum work was all by co-producers Bob Kulick and Brett Chassen

'Dee Does Broadway' will be out May 8 via Razor & Tie.

Check out the track listing below:

"Cabaret"
"The Ballad of Sweeney Todd"
"Big Spender" (with Cyndi Lauper)
"Mack the Knife"
"Whatever Lola Wants" (with Bebe Neuwirth)
"Music Of The Night" (with guest violinist Mark Wood)
"The Joint Is Jumpin'' (with Jesse Blaze Snider)
"Luck Be A Lady" (with Clay Aiken)
"I Get A Kick Out Of You"
"There Is Nothin' Like A Dame"
"Razzle Dazzle"
"Tonight/Somewhere"(with Patti LuPone)

You know, when I first heard they were doing a Christmas album, I said the same thing. I was dead wrong. The Christmas Album kicked ass.

Dee is creative, talented and versatile. He said it himself--it isn't Twisted Sister...and it isn't metal...but it does rock.

I say GO FOR IT! I certainly plan to catch at least one show to check it out.

Maybe next we will have the Jay Jay French Jazz Fusion Experience. I'm game for that too.

I have to be brutally honest here - when i first heard about the Broadway cd - i was very, very sceptical.
And I know that is hard for people to take :-( But over the years i've heard some real dire attempts at covers.

But today I got the cd - and I will eat humble pie by the tonne load here - it rock's like a mutha.
I had heard and seen clips from the album - but it's only when i put the cd on (on my headphones) that Dee's vocals blasted through and catapulted my doubts into the anti-matter universe.

Thanks Dee and the musicians involved for a great cd.

Hey All!!

Well....I have already made my thoughts known on the book...it is a great read...As for the CD....I think its fun and it totally rocks....with one exception...

For all the doubters, you have to look at this from an Van Helsings Curse "viewpoint"...a one-off shot at something completely different. Look at it from just a metalhead perspective and you ain't gonna like it...Also remember that Dee is not the first rocker to tread down the Broadway path. Both Paul Stanley and Sebastian Bach have long runs in Phantom of the Opera...so the concept aint new. And if you read the sleeve notes, this was originally set to be a joint venture with Alice Cooper!! Imagine how that would have turned out!!

As for the CD, all the tracks have a rocker 'edge". Sweeney Todd could almost be played in any metal club it is so heavy, so very Van Helsing/Horror-teria/Burn in Hell.... Other tracks have some "familiar" riffs and drumbeats which made me grin from ear to ear. Very tongue in cheek!! Mack the Knife has you going "Huh?' like to two old rocker guys in the video...then somebody hits the first power chord...No doubts where your heading after that...

The one "stunner" track is "Music of the Night" from Phantom of the opera. If anybody had any doubts about Dee's singing abilities....take a listen to this. ..jaw dropping....Actually wished Dee kept his rocker "edge" away from the track and sung it like the opening bars....simply stunning...blows all other versions into the weeds.

And if "Nothing like a Dame" does not have you laughing your nuts off, you need to get a life!! (Imagine Dee and cohorts in a video dressed in sailor uniforms dancing around with mops on a ships deck singing...a 'la Morcambe and Wise for those of you who are familiar with the show...it will be on Youtube. Remember this is a guy who likes to dress up!!)

There is only one track I "cringe" at when it plays. Dee's part is fine. But the female vocal on "Lola" has me reaching for the volume button. Sorry Bebe...I think its awful...dont know how it got out of the studio....waaaay too much "warble" But thats only my 2c...(and you can still sing better than me darlin'. )

For me, its a great CD. No different from Van Helsing, nor trying out Rock of Ages, or Gone Country (which was 'attacked' by Dee in a similar manner when you think about it) or making Strangeland. Its another string to the bow...pushing the boundaries as a vocalist, as an entertainer. Remember people...you can always watch/listen to something else...This is about reinventing yourself...a well learned Dee life lesson....(read the book..)

Now..I'm gonna say something here which may put a smile on your face!!....( or I could get shot down for...but I will say it anyway )...I have a theory on where this could all lead...if Dee gets more recognition as an actor/entertainer, as a "draw" for the general public and not just from the metal community, some smart enterprising Hollywood exec might just stump up the cash for Strangeland 2....wouldn't that be something??

Its May 27th. Twisted Sister are about to hit Europe June 2nd. I am very, very envious....but at least we get the Armadillo road report!! Over to you Terry!!

Remember to thank a veteran this Memorial Day weekend....

Peace out people....

Thanks brother--

I agree that the Broadway CD is just one more way that metal can transcend into other categories, show that rockers can make ANYTHING into something that kicks ass!

I'm packing my bags at this very moment....I leave for Norway in just 4 days...much to do! Still have to find my notepad so that I can type up the Fallen Blue Report--god help me if I have to do it by memory!

rock on, my babies--to Broadway and beyond!

As a footnote to my ramblings...

Today I played the CD to somebody who is not a Dee fan, not a Twisted Sister fan, not even a metal fan...a little rock maybe (a la Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins...thats her limit...) However...this lady does like and watch the Broadway shows. I played the whole CD to her whilst driving down the freeway...

The verdict...

In her own words..."THAT...is F**kin' Awsome!!"

'Nuff said.

I rest my case...
