ROB ZOMBIE: Video Of 'Jay Leno' Performance Posted Online - Mar. 22, 2006

A video clip of ROB ZOMBIE's live performance of the track "American Witch" on NBC-TV's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" — which was taped in the afternoon of March 15, 2006 for broadcast later that night — has been posted online at YouTube.com.

After a few people suggested that Zombie and his band must have been "lip-synching" during their performance (due to the broadcast's better-than-usual live sound), Zombie responded, "All I can say is thanks! We were of course playing live (I think that's pretty obvious) and I guess we sounded pretty tight. If anyone thought it was on tape, well, that's great. I told you the band never sounded so good. The folks at 'Leno' are very cool and let us have plenty of time to get the sound just right as opposed to most TV situations where you are just throw out there with no chance of getting a good sound."

"American Witch" comes off Zombie's new album, "Educated Horses", which is scheduled for release on March 28 via Geffen Records. The follow-up to 2001's "The Sinister Urge" was recorded at Los Angeles' Chop Shop Studios with co-producer Scott Humphrey, who had previously worked with Rob on the platinum hits "Hellbilly Deluxe" and "The Sinister Urge". Other musicians contributing to the CD include Josh Freese (A PERFECT CIRCLE, VANDALS) and Tommy Lee (MÖTLEY CRÜE).

Zombie has lined up the following in-store signing sessions around the album's release date:

Tuesday, March 28 at 5:00 p.m.
New York City
Virgin Megastore Times Square
45th and Broadway
Ph: 212-921-1020

Thursday, March 30 at 4:00 p.m.
Philadelphia, PA
Tower Records
9173 Roosevelt Blvd
Ph: 215-676-1578

Rob recently directed the video for the album's first single, "Foxy Foxy" in Los Angeles. Zombie re-teamed with "The Devil's Rejects" cinematographer Phil Parmet. Parmet has also worked on LED ZEPPELIN's "The Song Remains the Same" and FRANK ZAPPA's "Baby Snakes".

Zombie is currently headlining the "Educated Horses Tour", which kicked off on March 17 in Jacksonville, Florida and will hit 27 cities before concluding five weeks later in Mesa, Arizona. Joining Rob on this tour are guitarist John 5 (ex-MARILYN MANSON), longtime bassist Rob "Blasko" Nicholson and drummer Tommy Clufetos (ex-ALICE COOPER, TED NUGENT). Support acts on the tour are LACUNA COIL and BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE.

The singer took five years off between studio albums while he wrote and directed his first two movies, the 2003 horror hit "House of 1000 Corpses" and its sequel, 2005's "The Devil's Rejects".

After spending the last five years indulging his creative urges on celluloid (2003’s House Of 1000 Corpses and 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects), former White Zombie front man Rob Zombie has returned to music with his first new studio release since 2001’s The Sinister Urge.

Reassembling a new backing band (Consisting of ex-Marilyn Manson guitarist John Five, long time bassist Rob ‘Blasko’ Nicholson and drummers in A Perfect Circle/The Vandals’ Josh Freese, Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee and ex-Ted Nugent/Alice Cooper pounder Tommy Clufetos), and collaborating once again with co-producer/co-writer/multi-instrumentalist Scott Humphrey, Zombie attempts to reinvent himself with his long awaited third full length studio effort Educated Horses.

In typical Zombie fashion, the tone of the album is set with the brief piano/drum based instrumental score ‘Sawdust In The Blood’, which gives of an effective eerie soundtrack like quality to start things off.

‘American Witch’ is classic Zombie with it’s basic guitar riff structure, catchy (Slightly effect enhanced) chorus and overall slower grinding pace, but the lead off single ‘Foxy Foxy’ is a little too groove orientated and repetitive to really stand out, and perhaps a poor choice as a first single for fans expecting a hard hitting return.

By ‘17 Year Locust’ (And the slow, plodding slide guitar based number ‘The Devil’s Rejects’ further into the album), it’s fairly evident that there’s little in the way of the high energy speed that was evident on Zombie’s past releases, and although the sitar effects on the guitars provide an interesting effect, the song is fairly uneventful.

‘The Scorpion Sleeps’ manages to liven up the middle section of the album with a strong ‘70’s stomping influence (Gary Glitter’s ‘Rock And Roll’ springs to mind), while the rocking ‘Let It All Bleed Out’ (Preceded by the dark and haunting instrumental piece ‘100 Ways’, and featuring some great solo work from Five) and ‘Ride’ are by far the closest Educated Horses comes to sounding anything like 1998’s Hellbilly Deluxe.

The only other track to exemplify Zombie’s want for experimentation outside his usual style is the dark acoustic/symphonic effort ‘Death Of It All’. The stripped back feel again gives off a haunting/sinister feel, but with a definite maturity that’s rarely been shown from Zombie in the past.

Finishing up the album is ‘The Lords Of Salem’, which is essentially another stock standard Zombie filler delivered at a slow and lumbering pace.

Zombie has made an attempt to cut back on the industrial influences and go for a more organic sound, as well as rely less on the b-grade horror themes, and while it works in some cases, for the most part, his new direction lacks enough push to really distance himself from his familiar sound of the past. Educated Hoses is aimed strictly at fans that have been eagerly awaiting a new album, because while in the end it’s a good album, it’s hard not to think of Zombie as a one trick pony at this point of his career.
